| The centre was created through a government initiative
to position Hobart as principal port of call for Antarctica.
The successful tenderer for the visitor centre was AAV Business
Communications, who worked through agencies such as CSIRO, the
Antarctic Division, the Bureau of Meteorology and so on to assemble
the subject matter for the centre. |
| |
| Many components of the centre were sub-tendered by AAV; presumably this was seen as a way of involving local design houses, fine artists, construction peope and other suppliers. The classifieds columns of "The Mercury" had rarely made such interesting reading as when tenders appeared for items such as an actual size, wireframe whale. |
